Benefit for Guitars for Vets to be Held at The Bent Mountain Center

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, the Bent Mountain Center will holding a benefit for Guitars for Vets. The menu is oven fried chicken, mash potatoes, vegetable, and homemade desserts. Take out dinners will be served starting at 5:30, and the sit down dinner will be served starting at 6:00; cost is $10.00 per person.

At 6:30, Bob Schmucher will perform on the acoustic guitar, and then we will be recognizing all Veterans. Following the recognition, a benefit for Guitars for Vets, a group of Veterans from The Salem VA hospital, will perform. Guitars for Vets is a non-profit organization that helps injured and ailing veterans through the healing power of music. The group Guitars for Vets will perform for 45 minutes. (more…)

Trade Missions Help Floyd County’s’ Unemployment Problems

Virginia’s largest industries are forestry and agriculture, annually yielding $24 billion and $55 billion respectively and providing around 500,000 jobs throughout the Commonwealth.

Since 2010 the state of Virginia has been pursuing Governor Bob McDonnell’s aim to increase the levels of forestry and agricultural exports. This week the Governor, who has been on his second marketing and trade mission to China, has announced that opening of an office in Shanghai – China’s commercial and economic capital – to further the trading relationship between Virginia and China. As one the quickest growing economies in the world China had been highlighted as a country to pursue for new business opportunities for agribusiness exporters and producers.

2nd Annual 5k Run for Your Floyd Young Life w/ 1 mile fun run/walk

Date & Time: Saturday May 21, 2011 – 5k Run/Walk starts at 10:00 am. Fun Run festivities begin 9:30

Place: Hotel Floyd, 120 Wilson Street, Floyd 24091

Registration: Early registration encouraged – Race packets may be picked up from 8:00-8:45 on race day for 5K participants. Fun Run packets may be picked up during the same time at the Hotel Floyd lawn.
Entry Fees for: 5k Run/Walk: $20 includes a t-shirt before April 30th and $25 after May1st
1Mile fun run fee: $10 includes a t-shirt

Course: Starting and ending at Hotel Floyd and run through the town of Floyd.
Awards will be given to the top three finishers!

3rd Annual Service Fair!

Join us April 21st from 5-7 pm at the Floyd Elementary School Cafeteria for refreshments and student art gallery while vendors and specialists from across the region will be on site to offer services, screenings, and answer questions about various programs and services.

Early Childhood Specialists will be on hand and will offer free screenings in speech and language, developmental areas, and hearing. School Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, and many specialty vendors will be present to guide you to helpful services for ALL ages. (more…)

Denur Crafts Co-op of Kenya Benefit – Dec 8th

Leah Mitula, a native from Kenya, Africa will be visiting Floyd, VA. Leah started a woman’s co-op in Kenya to help support the education of children. Kenya does not have a public school system and many women are unemployed living in a poverty lifestyle. They do not have the means to send their children to primary school. The vision of Denur Crafts is to provide education for the children of the members through the sales of their Tribal African Jewelry and handmade crafts. There is an annual fee of $150 for one child to attend school since Kenya does not have a public school system. (more…)
