Requesting
more information about the Weddle Family roots.
My
name is Randall Weddle. I recently learned that my ancestors
arrived in the New World well before the Revolution and
settled in Virginia. Through the assistance of the Montgomery-Floyd
Regional Library, (Charlotte Atkins, Library Assistant),
I was able to identify my GGGGreat Grandfather, Benjamin
Weddle, who was an early settler in the Floyd County area.
I have also learned that my GGGreat Grandfather, Andrew
Weddle, and his son, John B. Weddle, lived and died in
Floyd County, and that my Great Grandfather, Callahill
Weddle, moved on to Ohio.
I was raised in Indiana, where my Grandfather moved to
from Ohio when he was a young man. I moved to Alaska,in
1971, where I have raised my family. My oldest son has
now moved to Virginia, which gives me a special interest
in your State, and I thought I would share with your readers
the information I have learned about our Weddle roots.
I hope some of my Weddle relatives in Floyd County will
read this and respond, perhaps providing more information
than I have about the Weddle roots.
Benjamin Weddle was born in Lancaster Co. PA in 1742.
He moved to Montgomery County, Virginia and fought the
Indians, as part of the Virginia Militia. He was a Captain
under the leadership of General Andrew Lewis. Among other
things, they fought a famous battle, at Point Pleasant,
defeating a larger force of Indians and breaking their
power in the Ohio Valley. Point Pleasant is in the angle
formed by the Kanawha, where it meets the Ohio. This is
now known as Point Pleasant West Virginia.
Benjamin Weddle went on to fight in the Revolutionary
War and patented 1600 acres in Floyd County while Patrick
Henry was governor of Virginia. One of his sons was Andrew
(named after General Lewis?), who was my GGreat Grandfather.
He was born and died and in Floyd County. One of his sons
was John, who was also born and died in Floyd County.
And then the migration began. One of his sons was Callahill,
who moved to Miami County Ohio and died there in 1900,
when my Grandfather was 12 years old.
My Grandfather moved to Indiana and married my Grandmother
in 1908. My father was born on the family farm in Huntington
Indiana in 1916 and I came along in 1944. My oldest son,
who now lives in Northern Virginia, was born in 1971.
